GMC authorities playing politics, students suffer
9/15/2007 10:33:25 PM
SURINDER RAINA
JAMMU Sept 15-
The much talked about increase in the seats for MBBS in Government Medical College here remained just on papers as the authorities have failed to give it a practical shape. Though GMC is the only government medical college in Jammu where a hundred doctors pass out annually, little has been done for its upgradation of increasing to seats for the aspiring candidates. The non seriousness of the authorities, who are allegedly busy playing politics, is adversely affecting the study of the students.
According to sources, in 2004 government decided to increase seats for MBBS admission at GMC and sent a proposal to Medical Council of India (MCI) regarding this On the basis of the proposal the MCI sent an inspection team at GMC before giving permission to check the facilities and faculty and team after inspection submitted its report in which they refused to allow GMC to increase admissions in MBBS from one hundred to one hundred fifty because of its deficiency in faculty and requirements. Sources revealed that MCI in its report wrote that GMC is not capable of even teaching hundred students due to shortage of faculty members and other allied facilities. Despite lapse of three years the government has not been able to overcome these deficiencies putting the aspiring medical students at the cross roads. The authorities, sources said, are playing game of politics which is not a good sign for college.
Giving details sources added that inspection team found deficiency of one reader in foresensic medicines, pediatrics, psychiatry, ENT, obstetrics and gynecology each and three in Anesthesiology and two in radio-diagnosis. Whereas MCI team also wrote in its report that there is no student lab available in forensic medicines department and found deficiency in its library with thirty books only in library. Inspection team in its report also mentioned that GMC has also shortage in teaching faculty as one professor each in Biochemistry, Pediatrics and PSM and three associates professor in Pathology, two in Anatomy and Radio Diagnosis and one each in Forensic Medicines, Psychiatrics, ENT, Anesthesia and Pediatrics. Sources told that there is shortage of two lecturers in Pediatrics, one tutor in Skin and VD and three residents in Psychiatry as mentioned in MCI report.
Sources told that from last two years GMC are admitting 120 students in place of 100 but no step has been taken by the government to provide the requisite faculty members while some more faculty members are getting retired.
