| Jammu University initiates CBMs | | VC meets Muslim girls, assures security and dignity | | Shafiq Mir Rajouri, September 16, 2007 In reaction to the allegations that Muslim girl students were being harassed by some security agencies in Jammu University and other allied colleges, Vice Chancellor Jammu University , Amitabh Matoo has personally initiated the Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) among the Muslim students studying in Jammu University particularly girls. The step has been taken by the VC after it appeared in a section of media that about a dozen Muslim girls from Rajouri and Poonch border region have returned to their respective homes following alleged harassment by some security agencies. This morning, Vice Chancellor, Amitabh Matoo convened a meeting of some senior staff members and HODs of various departments and directed them to start the campaign of Confidence Building Measures among the Muslim students particularly the girls studying in the university. He also directed all the HODs not to allow any security agency to quiz any of the students in the university campus. Giving details, Fatima of Chemistry department and Saima Zakir of Botany department told this correspondent on telephone that VC Matoo personally visited all girls hostels this morning and assured all the Muslim girls that no body will be allowed to question or quiz them. They also informed that the concerned wardens have been strictly asked to take care of the Muslim girls putting up in the hostels. Giving details, sources said since a law student Nahida Altaf of Surankote in border district Poonch was last week arrested by police along with some explosive material at Jammu, the police and other security agencies started keeping eyes on all the Muslim girls of Rajouri and Poonch. This was not the alone incident, last month, police also picked up a woman namely Mqsooda Khatoon a government school teacher of Mendhar for sheltering the militants in her house at Janipur Jammu. After the two incidents, sources said police and other security agencies started investigating the credentials of all the Muslim girls studying in Jammu university and other allied colleges. Feeling insecurity, sources said, at least eleven girl students of Rajouri and Poonch studying in Jammu University and other allied colleges returned to their respective homes saying that they were being harassed by some unknown people in connection with Nahida case. On being contacted, Vice Chancellor Jammu University, Amitabh Matoo said that no one will be allowed to quiz or question any of the student without his prior permission. He said “I have started investigations that who had come in the campus and interrogated the students. Moreover I can never bear questioning of any student on selective basis. You should also keep it in mind that the Law student who was arrested by police belonged to a private Law college not Jammu University campus”, said Matoo assuring the full security and dignity to the scared students.
