| Cancer on the rise in State | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 17 While violence continues to be a matter of major concern in the state, the growing number of cancer cases here is also posing serious challenges before the health professionals. According to Indian Council of Medicine Research, over 6,800 cases of cancer are reported every year. More than 50 per cent of these cancer patients are from the Valley, said Dr Nissar Ahmad Wani, oncologist, Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar. Leading oncologists who were in Srinagar recently for a conference on cancer, expressed their concern in this matter. Cancer specialists feel that if a massive awareness campaign is not launched and better technology to deal with the disease at early stages are not introduced things will not only get worse. Kashmir's cancer specialists say that what they require for proper treatment and diagnosis is six radiotherapy plants and three departments of medical and surgical oncology. Though Kashmir has a complete state of the art cancer department in GMC but the number of patients treated at the center is increasing day by day, said the Principal Government Medical College, Prof MA Shah. Though exact reason for the occurrence of cancer among people was not known but according to the World Health Organization, more than 50 percent of cancers occur due to smoking, diet, infections and change in lifestyle. In Kashmir, the most prevalent forms of cancer are in the stomach, lung and reproductive organs. Only six per cent of the of annual budget is specified for the health sector in India as compared to more than 30 per cent on defence
