Independence Day celebrated with gaiety, fervour

Jammu, Aug. 16:
Independence day was celebrated all over the state including Jammu division. The function was celebrated at different places, somewhere with solemnity, somewhere with colourfulness. Government functionaries, armed forces, leaders of political parties, different NGOs, business organizations and educational institutions participated in the function with full blooded zeal and enthusiasm. National Flag unfurled, homage paid to martyrs, physical feats exhibited, cultural shows played and distribution of sweets were chief features, of the greatest of National festivals, though under the terrorist threat, defied valiantly.
Indian National Congress held the main functions at PCC HQs Srinagar, where Peerzada Mohd Syed , PCC chief hoisted the Tri- Colour, while at Jammu HQs OM Chopra, DCC President and ex MLA unfurled the Flag. Many senior leaders, mass organizations, trade unions and NGOs were present.
The day was celebrated at Tiger War Memorial at Satwari cantonment. The function started with the Major Gen. Jasbir Singh, VSM, GOC tiger Division laying a wreath at Tiger War Memorial to commemorate the sacrifices made by the security forces in preserving the security of the country. Traditional gaiety, fervour and fanfare were the hallmark of the event.
Wreaths were also laid by serving and retired Army officers and JCOs on the memorial.
Prominent persons who laid the wreath were Brig MM Chaudhary, Deputy GOC and Hony. Captain (Retd.) Bana Singh, Param Vir Chakra. A special guard paid honour to the martyrs.
Rotary Club Jammu celebrated I-Day with a glittering flag hoisting ceremony at Rotary Club Gandhi Nagar.
President Jatinder Singh Gandhok unfurled the Tri-Colour in presence of Amarjeet Singh
Modi and other esteemed members.The president exhorted the members to serve the community heart and soul. Later, sweets were also distributed.
Crossed Swords Division of Army celebrated the day by unfurling the tri-colour at Akhnoor Bridge.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), general secretary, Romesh Mahajan unfurled the flag at party headquarters in Jammu. Large number of party leaders and activists inxcluding Ved Mahajan, Shanti Devi and Nissar Khan were present on the occasion.
Nationalist Congress Party organized a programme at Kaluchak where former mnister, Randhir Singh was the chief guest. Singh addressed the gathering and sweets were distributed among the participants.
Provincial unit of National Conference held a programme at Sher-i-Kashmir Bhavan where provincial president of the party, Ajay Sadhotra unfurled the national flag.
At a function held at Bakshi Nagar, Jammu Municipal Corporation councilor, Surinder Singh Shinghari led a march attended by the residents of the area and school children. The participants marched through the streets of the locality singing patriotic songs.
Reports of Independence day celebrations also poured in from Raghunath Bazar Businessmen Association, Jammu and Kashmir Christian Association, Sunjuwan Middle School, Indiraji Shiksha Kendra School, Lower Roop Nagar Welfare Association, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, All J&K PHE Employees Union and Modern Secular Institute of Education, Chinnore.
The day was also celebrated with fervor by Apsara Road Traders Association (Gandhi Nagar), All J&K Excise and Commercial Tax Employees Union, Water Works (PHE) Employees Association and Adarsh Bhartiya Samaj.
At New Delhi, 60th Independence Day was today celebrated at Jammu and Kashmir House 5-Prithvi Raj road by unfurling the national flag by Mr. S V Bhave Resident Commissioner. All the employees posted with the Resident Commissioner participated. The 14th Bt JKAP presented a guard of honour.
Yet in another function Mr. M H Malik Secretary Resident Commissioner unfurled the national flag at Chankiya Puri Guest House.
Independence Day was also celebrated with patriotic fervour and much fan-fare at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University today with Vice-Chancellor Prof N K Vansal hoisting the national flag at an impressive function.
The students of the University coming from various parts of the country, faculty, staff and security participated.
At Rajouri, amidst tight security arrangements, the Independence day was celebrated with full fervour and gaiety in each corner of the district Rajouri here today. Despite the presence of militants in the rural areas, since morning, the school children ware seen with Tri colour flag in their hands proceeding towards the venue of the functions organised in their respective areas. However, the main function of the district was organised by district administration in Police lines area Rajouri where Gulchain Singh Chark minister for works hoisted National flag and took the salute of the march pass parade.
