Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 17In form, Akshun and Sumeet have sailed into the final of the cadet boys’ singles event on the opening day of the Devinder (Munna) Sharma memorial table tennis tournament that underway at Indoor Complex, M A Stadium, here today. In the semi-finals played this evening, Akshun defeated Janu in easy straight sets 11-2, 11-4 while Sunmeet outplayed Ankit Arora 11-4, 11-5. Earlier, in the quarterfinals, Alankit had a close contest before losing to Ankit 9-11, 5-11. In another quarter-final, Akshun defeated Rajat in equal straight sets 11-4, 11-4. First round matches: Janu bt Harman Singh 11-2, 11-6; Alankit bt Mahir 11-5, 11-4 and Sunmeet bt Manik 11-0, 11-2. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by R S Jasrotia, president Diploma Engineers Association in a well attended inaugural function. In his address to the young participants, he highlighted the sportsman spirit of Devinder Sharma, who himself was an active table tennis player besides being an excellent organizer. Prominent among those present in the opening function were Krishan Lal Sharma, Sports Officer of the J&K State Sports Council, Ajay Sharma, Member State Sports Council and Satish Gupta, senior table tennis coach. The competitions are being organized under the supervision of organizing secretary, Rajan Sharma. About Devinder Sharma: District secretary the Table Tennis Association of Udhampur, Devinder Sharma was a good player of table tennis. He was also instrumental in conducting a number of events. Junior Engineer with PHE, Devinder died in a road accident last year near Railway Station.
