| SHRC to take Govt heads on | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep17: Even though the government had loudly clarified that then chairman of State Human Rights Commission, Justice AM Mir, had resigned on personal grounds and not for the reason that his recommendations were not being implemented, the same problem has cropped up yet again –a full one year after the quitting of the commission's chief. This time, however, the problem has got little murkier as the Human Rights Commission had decided to take on the government directly in the High Court. Annoyed over the response of the implementation authorities, the Commission is going to file a writ petition in the high court against the government for not implementing its recommendations in a case related to grant of compensation to a bomb blast victim. Chairperson of SHRC Justice (Retd) M Y Kawoosa directed the secretary of the commission to file a writ petition on its behalf as the administration had not paid the recommended amount of compensation to one Imtiyaz Ahmad Sofi, who had been permanently disabled in a bomb blast a few years back. "This is the first landmark decision taken by the commission," a statement issued by the SHRC said. Justice Kawoos passed the direction after hearing the complainant, who said the deputy commissioner concerned released only Rs 5000 as against Rs 75,000 recommended by the commission. The complainant, who is very poor and not in a position to earn his livelihood, refused to take the amount and approached the Commission again, the statement said. On February 17, 2004, the SHRC had recommended the government pay Rs 75,000 to Sofi
