| Five vacant IG posts to be filled shortly | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 18 The Director General Police, Kuldeep Khuda, has recommended to the Government creation of one post of Inspector General Personnel in the police headquarters so that a very senior officer looked after establishment, including posting and transfers of police officials. While making this recommendation the DGP has not so far assigned personnel department to an officer of the rank of DIG. Hitherto, the department of personnel in the police headquarters was being manned by one DIG. Already four posts of IGs are vacant in the state and with the retirement of one IG headquarters in January the number of vacant posts of IGs would rise to five. Police sources said that at present posts of IG police modernisation, Housing Corporation, IRP Battalions and IG personnel stand vacant. The sources said that as per the norms set by the Government of India the state government was supposed to appoint one officer of the rank of IG for looking after IRP battalions. Under the norms once the IRP battalions increase to 15 a separate IG has to be posted for the force. At present IG Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police looks after the IRP battalions also. According to these sources at least six officers of the rank of DIGs have become entitled to get elevated to the rank of IG and the Government recently promoted 10 SSPs to the rank of DIGs to remove stagnation in the upper hierarchy in police. Reports said that the Government is likely to fill five vacant posts of IGs within next three months so that those DIGS who have completed seven to eight years of their tenure on one post got an opportunity to get elevated to the higher rank. Meanwhile, the entre,on the request of the state Government, has sanctioned Rs.42 crores for developing housing facilities for the police.Mr Khuda said that modernisation of police, which included equipping men with latest weapons, communication and mobility systems, was a regular process. The DGP said that "proper housing and adequate emoluments not only cater to meet the basic requirements of the police but also help in boosting their morale." He said that the union Home Ministry has "always been responding to our requirements.""Police modernization and financial assistance from the centre for security related works have given a boost to our efforts for bringing down the level of militancy,"he added (KIP)
