The mid day meal scheme apart from source of attraction for the students from poor backgrounds have also a unique feature of nutritious value. However, in most of the primary schools in RS Pura zone, the guidelines are not followed and an unhealthy meal is being served to the students.
In most of the total 96 schools in this zone, the students are being provided meal of lesser nutrient value and unhygienic food causing problems to the students. According to mid day meal scheme the food provided to the students should be enriched with full proteins and seven gram nutrients. But due to the ignorance of Education department student are here forced to eat protein-less food.
Besides being lesser nutritious than required, the raw food material is stored in unhygienic conditions thus causing health hazards for the students. The food is stored in unprotected areas where rats and insects have a field day. Many locals including president of the J&K Dehati Sewa Sanstha, Gara Ram mottan, Nehru Yuva Kendra's Chander Bhushan and BSP state secretary Ajaib Singh Mottan told EARLY TIMES that the students are being served with rotten food.
It may be mentioned here there is provision of hiring a cook to prepare the food but here in RS Pura schools this job is also done by the students. The cook has to be paid Rs 500 a month but locals allege that since students are forced to cook the food this amount of Rs 500 goes to the savings of the concerned teachers.
When contacted, the Minister of State for Education, Manjit Singh told EARLY TIMES that his department will take immediate action against the erring teachers of RS Pura zone. He also informed that now the government has made a scheme of bringing up infrastructure in every school for storage of the food. The Minister appealed to the parents and other concerned locals that they bring any such complaint to his notice.
According to report under mid day meal scheme, 100 gram rice and Rs 1.50 for extra materials is provide per student per day.
