Meanwhile Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today had to cancel his visit to his constituency as militants struck at the areas close to the venue where he had to address a public meeting. A fierce encounter was followed in which two policemen were seriously injured.
Reports said that five militants -- two Pakistan-based Jaish-e -Mohammad (JeM) and three Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) -- were killed by security forces in two fierce encounters in north Kashmir today.
A defence ministry spokesman said during surveillance and area domination patrolling, troops of 14 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) observed movement of militants in thick jungles of Sariwas woods on the higher reaches adjoining Bandipora. He said troops encircled them and asked them to surrender.
Instead the militants opened fire, he said adding troops also retaliated and in the fierce fire fight all the three militants were gunned down.
The slain militants were identified as Farooq Ahmed Khan alias Akram, Shahjahan Khan alias Waqas and Mushtaq Ahmed Khan of HM.
Three AK-56 rifles, six magazines, 117 rounds, two hand grenades, one wireless set and other war like equipment were recovered from the slain militants.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Viplav Kumar said the SOG and 57 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched a joint operation at Khyar village, Bandipora, in Baramulla district in the early hours today.
When the troops were about to storm a particular house, militants opened fire while trying to escape in a nearby field. Troops also retaliated and killed both the militants who were later identified as Mohammad Abu Bakr alias Usman, son of Mohd Iqbal Rayai resident of Kabirwala Khandwal, Punjab, Pakistan and Mohammad Tariq Khan alias Sajid son of Shah Mohd Khan resident of Tradkhal Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Two AK rifles, two hand grenades, two Pouches, eight magazines and 150 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, the SSP said.
Meanwhile, two policemen were injured in a fierce encounter between police and the holed up guerrillas in Bhaderwah town of Doda district where Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was supposed to visit Tuesday.
Azad had to cancel his visit to Bhaderwah, his home constituency, because the encounter site is close to the guesthouse where he was to meet the people, official sources said.
A senior police official said the gunfight between police and a heavily armed group of militants began at 4 a.m. Tuesday. The guerrillas are hiding in a residential house in the main Bhaderwah town 250 km northeast of Jammu, the official said.
The militants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately at the police, injuring Sub Inspector Shiv Kumar and a constable who were shifted to Government Medical College hospital Jammu.
The encounter was on till Tuesday evening. 'At the moment, we are engaged in gunfight with militants,' said Manohar Singh, senior superintendent of police.
In a separate incident, three persons including one Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant were arrested by security forces in Kishtwar, Udhampur and Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said.
On a tip off, troops of 10 Rastriya Rifles (RR) raided a house in Kulshan area in Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district, they said.
They arrested Hizbul Mujahideen militant Gulzar Ahmed and recovered one grenade and some rounds from him. He was active in militancy since 2004.
Troops also arrested two over ground workers (ogws) - Abu Hurena and Mohmmad Lal in Jamlan-Mahore and Badani Nala in Reasi and Udhampur districts respectively.
In another incident in North Kashmir, two Indian Army soldiers and two civilians were wounded in a fierce gunfight with militants in a north Kashmir village Monday, police said.
Troops of anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR), acting on specific information, surrounded a house in Bomai village, 56 km from here in Baramulla district, in the morning.
'The militants opened fire at the RR troops. The fire was returned, and in the gunfight two soldiers were wounded. They were evacuated to hospital for treatment,' said a senior police officer. Two civilians were also injured in the shoot-out and were taken to the Sopore district hospital. The operation was still in progress, an army officer said in the evening.
