| EP tenants flay department for continuous harassment | | ‘Corruption thriving in EP department’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sept 19 A joint meeting of Evacuees Property Tenants Welfare Society and Rajinder Bazar Traders Welfare Association held here today, under the chairmanship of Banarsi Das Angral, President of both the organizations, flayed the continuous harassment being caused by the Evacuee Property Department to its tenants, by issuing them eviction notices and arbitrarily enhancing the rent of houses and shops allotted to the tenants for last several decades. Despite the assurances given by the MoS Revenue, Prem Sagar Aziz to a delegation of evacuee property tenants who had called on him last month at Jammu and instructions issued by him to the Custodian General telephonically at Srinagar and to the Custodian Jammu, in the presence of the delegation, to stop sending any notices to the tenants for entering into fresh rent deeds on enhanced rents and that the notices issued already be held null and void, the Custodian EP Jammu continues issuing notices, threatening eviction, if the tenants do not enter into fresh rent deeds, with exorbitant and arbitrary enhanced rents, they alleged.. Banarsi Das Angral gave lie to the claim made by the evacuee property department, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also the Minister Incharge Revenue and the MoS Prem Sagar Aziz, quoting report send to them by the Custodian General EP that one thousand EP houses damaged in the recent rains, have been repaired. He told the meeting that some repairs have been undertaken only in one 10’x10’ room of house number 755 EP at Jogi Gate Jammu, where slab was laid. But here too eight bags of cement and labour charges were paid by the tenant himself, as demanded by the EP authorities and the department only provided 80 kg of iron for the purpose. This amply proves the corrupt practices being adopted by the EP authorities. The meeting brought on record that the Custodian General EP Kifayat Hussain Razvi was conferred honour recently, with a gold medal and cash reward of rupees one lakh, on account of his claimed honesty. But in view of the corrupt practices going on under his very nose in the EP department and harassment caused to the tenants by the Custodian General, who disregards his own commitments as well as instructions from the higher ups to solve the problems of the tenants, there is great resentment among the tenants over such a undeserving officer being selected for the award. The meeting also rued that the assurances given to the representatives of the EP tenants by the Revenue Secretary and the then Custodian General Azad Ahmed Lone, that the demand of the representatives of EP tenants, to effect long term lease of 40 years, in respect of houses and shops under occupation of tenants for a long time, will be given favourable consideration, has not been fulfilled even after laps of two years. The two organizations resolved that in the next assembly elections they will support only that party and those candidates who stand by them in their struggle for getting justice. Others who attended the meeting included Krishanlal Gupta Chairman, Nazir Ahmed Vice President, Suraj Prakesh Sharma Gen. Secy., Mohd Sharif Secy, Rattan Sawhney cashier, Bhagwan Das Vaid, Sikander Parvez Paul, Meena Begam and Vijay Raina
