| All eyes now on Poonch | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 20 Ahead of the next assembly elections and the guesswork on possibility of electoral alliance, all eyes are now focused on the actions of Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress in the Poonch constituency which may shortly go to the polls. The Poonch (Haveli) constituency had fallen vacant due to the death of its MLA Ghulam Mohammad Jan who passed away recently. This assembly is likely to go the by-elections shortly after the Election Commission makes a formal announcement to this effect. GM Jan was from National Conference and he represented this constituency twice. Since a possibility of the PDP-Congress alliance in next assembly elections has still not been ruled out or ruled in, the political observers are keenly watching the developments in Poonch. If either of the both parties –Peoples Democratic Party or the Congress –fielded its candidate with the support of the other one, the plan of action will be amply clear that both may go for an alliance in next elections. However, their going ahead against each other will mark the beginning of a political splitting and offering and level play field to the National Conference. "We are yet to decide about this. The issue will come under consideration once the formal announcement is made", said a Peoples Democratic Party leader. He pointed out that there should be a candidate from either his party or the Congress to keep the National Conference away. However, the PDP leader who would rather not be named strictly maintained that this is his own opinion and not necessarily of the party. On the other hand the Congress says that they have a strong candidate in Poonch who had earlier lost twice with a narrow margin. Therefore, "the choice should naturally be ours", he said. It may be mentioned here that Yash Paul Sharma is a stalwart of the Congress in Poonch constituency. An old Congressman, he had briefly switched over to the PDP and was made its state vice president but later returned to Congress in 2001 when Ghulam Nabi Azad took over as PCC Chief. It is interesting to note that the aspirants of contesting elections from both PDP and Congress are more concerned over the Poonch battle. If both parties go ahead together then there will be a seat sharing and at many places aspirants of one party may have to sacrifice for the other.
