| J&K supports draft broadcast bill | | Study Swaminathan foundation model on community radio: Jora | | Early Times Reporter New Delhi|Sep 20 Making a strong case or the demands of the state in Information and Broadcasting sector, Jammu and Kashmir today sought extension of community radio facility to the universities in the state even as it supported the central government initiative to bring a draft broadcast regulatory bill in the parliament. Addressing the 26th meeting of Information Ministers (SIMCON) here today, Minister for Power, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora who represented the state on behalf of Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, asked for studying the Dr. Swaminathan Foundation model of community radio to make it far more result oriented before making a policy draft on the subject. Director Information, Mr. Zaffar Ahmad in the deliberations of the conference, assisted Mr. Jora. Supporting the central government’s initiative regarding the broadcast regulatory bill, Mr. Jora opined that there is a need to overhaul the existing legal regime regarding the regulation of broadcast content and cable television. He said the State Government has for now frozen entertainment tax in the state as an incentive to revive the closed movie theatres. Jora assured the conference that the ground situation in the state has improved for the better which is why the Bollywood must respond positively by resuming film shootings which suffered a set back due to a decade and a half long turmoil. He, however, pleaded for taking a practical view on security clearance on the requests for shooting by domestic and foreign filmmakers. He made a specific mention of famous Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorcess whose film project in Leh was refused clearance. Jora pleaded that the Radio and Doordarshan Kendras located in border areas in the state need to be appropriately augmented in terms of their capacity and manpower so that the coverage of the programmes is extended to the targeted people. In his concluding remarks, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mr. Priyaranjan Dass Munshi declared that henceforth the SIMCON would be an annual feature and the State Information Secretaries would meet twice a year on a regular basis.
