| SMVDU hosts seminar on energy | | | Early Times Reporter Katra | Sep 21 Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and a reputed energy scientist, Prof N K Bansal today called for 7-fold increase in India’s primary energy supply and uninstalled power capacity to meet the growing challenges. Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Recent advances in wind and hydro power generation’ in the university campus, Prof Bansal said that Indian growth rate is encouragingly doing well at 8 to 10 % and in order to sustain the tempo, India needs 7700000 MW of power. ‘This is a formidable challenge since the coal and gas is limited and 7 per cent oil is imported’, he said adding that India is endeavoring to acquire gas pipeline form Iran via Pakistan to import more gas to supplement its growing energy as the country’s reserves will not last long. ‘When one considers power sector, the scene on this front is rather grim. There is a shortage of electricity to run the ever-growing 'economic' machine, to which the needs of Indian middle class are added. Therefore, he said, India has option to go for a mix fuel supply with coal as primary energy source. He said it is cheaper to import coal than oil and added that other options are hydro, nuclear and renewable energy. ‘The hydro has a potential of 150000 MW which can be harnessed’, the Vice Chancellor maintained. Prof Bansal said that the Hydro capacity cannot be used to meet the base load and has to be compensated by either coal or nuclear. India's existing nuclear programme is based on CANDU type of technology; which has limitation and because of this factor the nuclear capacity in 60 years has remained only 4020 MW. He said normally light water reactor technology with enriched uranium is more economical. The Vice Chancellor said that renewable energy sources in a limited way can be utilized for low temperature The nuclear deal with the US can help India to solve its energy's problems, he added. The seminar, organized by School of Infrastructure Technology & Resource Management, SMVD University, was attended by several experts from energy-related areas especially wind and hydro power systems. Those who participated and spoke in the seminar included Dr. Ing. H. J. Wagner, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, Dr. Ing. Jyotirmay Mathur, MNIT Jaipur, Dr. Inderjit Singh, Price Water Cooper House, Mr. U. S. Rajvanshi, J. P. Associates, Mr. Prithvi Raj Dhar, JKEDA, Dr. M. K. Singal, IIT Roorkee. During the seminar various aspects of wind and hydro energy technologies were discussed. On this occasion Prof. Wagner gave detailed account energy scenario and R&D work being carried out in the said field in Germany, particularly in his institution.
