JMC fast losing credibility, fails to maintain cleanliness around temples/religious places
7/1/2006 10:13:16 PM
SUBASH SINGH
JAMMU | JULY 1

The tall claims of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) about keeping Jammu city clean fall to the ground, as it has even failed to maintain cleanliness and sanitation around sacred places in the city of temples. A glaring example of this failure is presence of a big heap of garbage lying in front of ‘Shiv temple’ at Subash Nagar Rehari locality in city. Shiv temple, Subash Nagar is an example to be probed into as the height of its negligence without caring even for the religious sentiments of the people of the area. People of the area are highly critical of JMC as it is not providing dustbins in the area despite numerous appeals and representations by the people in this regard.
The cows, dogs and other stray animals also contribute to the filth people throw. The people from other areas also come here and help to make the locality stink. They think that they do not have any kind of responsibility towards maintenance and cleanliness because they do not belong to this area. They do not feel shy even spreading litter in front of temple every time. Polythene bags bottles and all type of rubbish is spread in front of the temple, but JMC is not aware of the condition.
While talking to ‘Early Times’ a resident of the area Bhanu Pratap Sambyal said, “We approached JMC many times but all our efforts proved futile”. Ashish Sharma alleged that dumping of garbage in front of temple is nothing short of a sacrilege, he also alleged that JMC has turned a blind eye towards this burning problem and has failed to provide a community dustbin in the area. The residents of the area acknowledged that they are compelled to throw their house-hold waste in the open as there is hardly any other place available to dump it.
The Mohalla Welfare Committee active member Sanjay Gupta said JMC has paid no attention towards this issue, we are only demanding a dustbin so that people dump the litter inside the dustbin and no one is able to make this pious/sacred place filthy
Corporator of the ward, Hardeep Singh Mankotia when contacted said that corporation is determined towards the maintenance of entire ward. The issue is not only limited to a temple, as we are concerned about the entire ward .And very soon a dustbin would be placed on this spot. He further said that he along with his working committee members is trying his best to provide all types of facilities to the people of the ward. But, it is also a responsibility of the surrounding people to help authorities in maintaining the cleanliness.
