| State Police to raise women police battalion to counter women OGWs, Militant cadre | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 21 Following reports indicating and militants had started enrolling educated women as overground workers the state Government has decided to raise one battalion of women police. The state has not more than a couple of women police companies, which includes handful of them posted in several districts. The need for raising one Women IRP battalion rose when the plan of the police in carrying out checking and frisking of women passengers and others who run small business establishments or are seen moving in their cars by male police officials invited peoples’ wrath. Official sources said that the idea of raising one women police battalion was conceived soon after one woman was arrested in Kashmir on charge of helping militants in receiving and transmitting messages from and to their mentors through the internet for which the woman had received financial help for opening a cyber café. The café had become a hideout for militants. A senior police officer said today “hitherto we would not subject women to frisking but the arrest of a number of women on charge of acting as couriers of militant outfits has forced us to thoroughly check any female passenger or women visitors to hotels and restaurants or working in some private or Government offices.” And for this police need the help of women police officials. IG Jammu range SP Vaid also admit the fact that after SOG team arrested another law college student Nahida Altaf hailing from Surankote their worst fears were established. The young college student was roped in by the Hizbul Mujahideen commanders to strengthen their network in the Jammu region and was picked up while she was traveling in a car alongwith a consignment of eight live grenades and one UBGL. Her sustained interrogations has revealed that she was bring used by the militant commanders to build a strong network and using her to create more safe hideouts in the city. Two other women Rubina Kousar resident of Bhati Dhara in Mendhar and Misra Begum were picked up by the police for playing a key role in establishing network in the region. A senior police officer said that these days women over ground workers are being roped in by the militant outfits to acquire real estate on fake identities which could by them as safe hideouts and to safely transport arms and cash consignments to different locations escaping eyes of security forces.
