| NCC conference begins | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 21 The Minister of State for Defence Shri MM Pallam Raju has called for extending NCC Services to the remote and rural areas of the country. Inaugurating the 17th Joint State Representatives and Deputy Directors General (JSR&D) Conference of NCC in New Delhi today, the Minister said, there are over 5000 institutions waiting to enroll as members of the NCC family. He said it is for this reason that the Defence Ministry is considering a proposal to increase the strength of NCC by another 2 lakh cadets. The Minister informed the conference that the proposal of NCC to increase the overall coverage of the students by way of reducing the enrolment period of senior wing / senior division cadets by one year has been sanctioned. Shri Raju emphasised the need to focus on enhancement of incentives for NCC cadets both in education and employment. Earlier the Director General NCC Lieutenant General Prakash Choudhary gave a detailed power-point presentation. He informed the conference that NCC has taken up an adult girl literacy programme with the assistance from UNICEF. This programme will be implemented as a pilot project in some districts of the country. The one day Conference was attended by representatives of all the States. The conference was held with the aim of evolving and formulating policies based on past experience for eliminating the inadequacies for further refinement and improvements in the training methods and organizational matters. The issues like increase in NCC cadet strength, provisioning of adequate infrastructural support to NCC by the states and restructuring of NCC came up for discussion during the day-long conference, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release.
