| 10 labourers killed, 17 wounded in Leh mishap | | | Leh | Sep 21 At least ten labourers were killed and seventeen others were wounded, nine of them critically, when a truck skid off the road and fell into a deep gorge on Kargil-Leh road, this afternoon. Police sources said that a truck which was on its way from Kargil to Leh skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Namkila hill, Friday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a sharpe curve as a result of which the over-crowded vehicle met with the accident, they said. At least ten labourers, traveling in the truck, were killed on the spot and at least 17 others, including driver of the vehicle, were injured in the accident, police said. An official spokesman said that a rescue operation was launched to recover the labourers from the gorge. A team of doctors was also deputed on the spot from Kargil, sources said adding, senior officer from police and district administration personally monitored the operation. "Ten passengers were declared dead on the spot, while seven others were injured in the mishap", sources said adding; "Condition of nine of them was critical and are most likely to be shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment".
