| Of sons and daughters in battlefield Poonch | | In NC camp, Ganai's daughter prepares to take on Jaan's son | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 21 While the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party are yet to open their cards on Poonch assembly seat which is up for by-elections, the in-camp battle in the National Conference –which has held this seat twice recently –has got quite interesting. The by-elections to the Poonch assembly segment which fell vacant upon the demise of sitting legislator Ghulam Mohammad Jaan of the National Conference are due any time but the Election Commission is yet to make a formal announcement. However, it is widely believed that the elections might be held towards the end of November or early December. After the death of GM Jaan, his son had been projecting himself as being heir apparent, the natural claimant to the National Conference ticket. However, a surprise development today has left the Jaan-sons shell shocked. Another possible stake holder to the National Conference ticket has resigned from the government services and announced her decision to join active politics. Dr Shahnaz Ganai, daughter of a former Minister has jumped into the political field with all the possible reasons of running for the forthcoming elections. Former Minister, late GA Ganai was one of the influential figures of his time and loyalist and close confidante of the Gupkaar's power nerve. After his death the patronage of Dr Farooq Abdullah to his daughters have been quite visible but due to lobbying none of them could be fielded in the elections earlier. Now since, Dr Shahnaz Gani has resigned from the government services, the public indications are clear that either she has been advised by Dr Farooq Abdullah or she has taken affront by Dr Abdullah's pampering of Jaan's sons. Though for National Conference, it is not necessary that the ticket has to be decided between Jaan's son and Ganai's daughter but for their respective father's association with the party both are reportedly staking their natural claims to the ticket. It may be recalled here that when GM Jaan had passed, the former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah who attended the Jinaaza had done dastar-bandi to Jaan's son. (Dastaar bani means placing turban on the head which signifies declaration of the anointment of the successor). Ever since, reports reaching here from Poonch, say that Jaan's son has been preparing for the elections.
