BSNL wakes up to competition

In wake of stiff competition from its arch rivals and growing complaints of subscribers, particularly from the rural areas, the government controlled mobile telephone corporation, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is all set to give a major boost to its connectively.
The BSNL has been under stiff pressure from its subscribers particularly from the Kashmir Valley and peripheral districts of Jammu province including Rajouri, Poonch, Doda and Kathua for poor or no connectively at all. Even though the service provider made pretexts of the geographical disadvantages but the subscribers and experts of the communication system say that the poor connectivity is due to lack of proper infrastructure.
Now since Airtel and Aircel have already made their inroads well visible in the state and other companies like Reliance and Vodafone are all set to roll out their operations, the BSNL has decided to improve its facilities and infrastructure to enhance the connectivity.
For this purpose a Chennai bases company Gemini Communication Ltd has been roped in to install and commission telecom equipment and connect the accessories, the sources said. The company has been given contract to install the CDMA system which will not only improve but also help in expanding the BSNL mobile services across the state.
'The CDMA deployment will substantially enhance connectivity and clarity across Jammu and Kashmir for BSNL subscribers and expand its mobile network,' a top BSNL officer told EARLY TIMES. He said, The installation and commissioning include acceptance testing of various equipment and their connected accessories.
He said that Gemini Communication Ltd (GCL), a Rs.12.65-billion networking solutions company, has bagged a contract to install and commission telecom equipment and connected accessories in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Jammu and Kashmir circle besides 12 other circles in India. The deployment will be completed by October 2007.
The 12-year-old company has built a reputation for a wide spectrum of solution offerings. It employs 800 people in 90 locations across India and delivers turnkey and technology solutions with partnerships with leading technology companies around the world in LAN and WAN, computer telephony integration (CTI), network care products and services, and wireless and telecom solutions.
