| Jora reviews private sector participation in power sector | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Sep 22 Stating that policy of the government is to make Power Sector as one of the prime resource of the State, Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that Jammu and Kashmir is set to emerge as energy surplus State. For the purpose special focus has been given on speedy completion of mega, micro and mini hydel power projects in the State, besides, identification and tapping of hitherto unexploited hydel potential available. . Jora was speaking at a high level meeting convened here today to review the private sector participation in power sector of the state. The meeting decided to give 51 new small hydro electric projects totaling 330 MWs to private sector through a transparent competitive bidding. The step ai at fast development of hydel potential for speedy percolation of power benefits to the people. The meeting was informed that implementation agreements and Power Purchase Agreements with 10 private sector players totaling to 107 MWs under Phase-I of the policy will be signed very soon. It is pertinent to mention here that under State Hydel Policy, operational since 2003 as many as 28 new projects have so far been offered to private sector, of which 10 stands already allotted while 18 are in pipe line. Jora directed the Power Development Corporation to take up new schemes as per the needs of people in far flung areas in consultation with respective legislators as already directed. Among others, Commissioner Secretary Power Basharat Dar, Development Commissioner Power Showkat Rashid Wani, Managing Director PDC, Sandeep K. Naik, Chief Engineer Civil Investigation and Design Wing PDC and officers of the corporation also attended the meeting.
