New York | Sep 22
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti has sought the intervention of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) for the economic and social upliftment of the women in Jammu & Kashmir.
Mufti called on S K Guha, UNIFEM head for Asia Pacific and Arab States here the other day to discuss how UNIFEM could assist the State in the implementation of various programs for the development of the women whose lives have been traumatized by the violence. She said in its transition from conflict to peace, Jammu & Kashmir needs policy and structural interventions that appropriately respond to the needs of the women whose lives have been shattered by the violence. She said investment in women is one of the most effective means for real, sustainable development and peace building. "In Jammu & Kashmir, like other conflict areas, women and children have suffered immensely because of the violence and there are presently thousands of orphans and widows, some of them living in most deplorable conditions," she said.
Mehbooba said while the State and the Central Government already have some social security schemes for the women, but these need to be amplified through innovative measures for more tangible impact. She said this could be done through the experiences and programs of the UNIFEM as the organization would not only bring innovative expertise, but also improvement in the existing schemes.
Expressing keenness to work in Jammu & Kashmir, the UNIFEM authorities, however, told PDP President that a formal request must be made to the UNIFEM in this regard through Government of India.
Mehbooba assured the UNIFEM authorities that on her return to Delhi, she would call on the Union Minister for Women and Child Development to explore how UNIFEM could be involved in the implementation of various development programs for the women in Jammu & Kashmir.
UNIFEM Program Officer for India, Suneeta Dhar was also present at the meeting.
