| Consumer rights to be fully protected: Yaseen | | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU, AUGUST 17 :
Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen today convened a high level meeting with CAPD officers to take stock of the functioning of the department. The Minister asked the Director CAPD Mr. Vinod Koul to personally visit Doda, Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur and Kathua districts of Jammu region and took stock of the store articles of every district. He said that the coalition government is making tireless efforts to provide food-grains, better sewerage, drainage facilities, construction of link roads and slaughter houses, drinking water and power supply besides other civic facilities to the people at every nook and corner of the state for the benefit of all sections of the society. He asked the officers to dump food-grains in advance for those people who are live in hilly areas so that they do not face any problem in winter season. He issued on-the spot instructions to the authorities to issue ration cards to card holders with numbers and duly attested by the CAPD authorities. The Minister was apprised by the Assistant Director of CAPD, Kishtwar that 92 quintals of foodgrains worth Rs. 1.5 lakh have been seized. The Minister took strong exceptions made by some senior functionaries of Doda-Udhampur districts about highlighting the exaggerated figures of Rs. 3 crores as against the actual figure of Rs. 1.5 lakh. He asked the officers to be careful and informed that the government shall not hesitate to take extreme steps against the officer responsible for embezzlement and also assured the officers that the department shall protect them from any harassment. He directed the District Development Commissioner Doda to submit a detailed report about functioning of the department in Doda district. Minister asked them to work with zeal and dedication and come up with the expectations of the people. He reiterated that government has firmly resolved to make consumer affairs and public distribution department consumer friendly, transparent and accountable. "Consumer Rights are to be protected at all costs", he said. He asked the officers to submit reports on their findings regularly and such reports will be analyzed and action will be taken subsequently if any thing adverse is reported. The Minister said that protection of consumer's interests was his basic duty. He said consumers' needs to be educated about their rights and protection thereof as a large chunk of population is still ignorant about their rights. Efforts are afoot for proper distribution of essential commodities including LPG, Kerosene Oil, Diesel and Edible Oil.The Minister said that the government will soon equip the state laboratory with modern technology for checking the samples so that the tests are qualitative and credible. Later, Mr. Yaseen also convened a meeting with representatives of HPCL, BPC, LPG etc to take stock of the supply position of LPG cylinders in J&K. Secretary CAPD Mr. Khalid Habib and other senior officers of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution were present in the meeting. |
