Akanksha Raina wins sub-junior girls title

Akanksha Raina today emerged as the sub-junior girls singles champion beating a fighting Sulkhani Kour in a well contested final late this evening in the ongoing 35th State Badminton Championship underway at Indoor Complex, M A Stadium, here.
Facing hardships in the first extended set 23-21, Akanksha lost the following 16-21 to fighting Sulakhani. However, in the deciding third set, Akanksha played a controlled game throughout to make it a 21-18 win. The result: 23-21, 16-21, 21-18.Earlier, in the semi-finals, Sulakhani trounced Manisha 21-13, 21-5.
Meanwhile, the under-10 girls singles title was clinched by Mega, who defeated Apurva Gupta 21-16, 21-14 to claim the title. In the mini girls singles final, Diksha Mahajan emerged winner beating Tanjula in equal straight sets 21-11, 21-11. The sub-junior girls doubles title went to Akansha and Deepashi, who beat Manisha and Sulakhani 21-17, 21-13 in the final today.
In men’s singles group, last year champion, Avnish Sharma, Vikram Saini, Rahul Sharma and Vipul Saini have made it into the semi-finals. Now, in the semis, Avnish will take on Vikram Saini and Rahul will meet Vipul Saini.
Diksha and Vandana have also reached the women’s singles final. In the semi-finals, played today, Diksha beat Akanksha 21-8, 21-23, 21-8 and Vandana outplayed Kanika 21-11, 21-16.
Meanwhile, according to the general secretary of the Association, Dr O D Sharma the finals shall be played tomorrow at 5 pm. In the prize distribution function, which shall take place tomorrow, Minister for Health Education, Mangat Ram Sharma has consented to be the chief guest.

Under-10 boys singles semifinals: D S Shivam bt Akhil 21-18, 21-11; Parth Koul bt Rajat 21-17, 21-14.
Sub-junior boys singles QFs: Abhijit bt Aman 21-13, 21-6; Arshdeep bt Shiva 21-17, 21-10; Aziz bt Ashish 21-9, 21-16, Faisal bt Rohit 21-8, 21-8.
Sub-junior boys doubles semi-finals: Shiva and Aziz bt Shantul and Pranav 21-14, 21-13; Sohail and Arshdeep bt Abhijit and Faisal 21-13, 6-21, 25-23.
Junior boys singles QFs: Vipul bt Naresh 21-8, 21-8; Lokesh bt Maninder 21-12, 21-12; Farhan bt Nikhil 21-17, 21-15; Sahil Verma bt Ishan 21-15, 21-11.
Men’s doubles QFs: Vipul Saini and Vikram Saini bt Ravinder and Manan 21-9, 21-8; Raju and N Khajuria bt Gagandeep and Atul 7-21, 21-15, 21-18; Pankaj and Neeraj Amla bt Harjeet Sethi and Mahesh 21-12, 21-16.
Veteran doubles semi-finals: Balbir Jamwal bt Baktawar Singh 21-12, 21-14; Som Raj Gupta bt Anil Gorkha 21-9, 21-13.
Veteran doubles semi-finals: Som Raj Gupta and Balbir bt N Khajuria and Ravinder Gupta 21-18, 21-13 and Arun Sethi and P D Gupta bt V Dewan and Surinder Gupta 21-17, 17-21, 23-21.
