| Power goes private, slowly | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sept 23 Formally roping in the entrepreneurs in power generation sector, the Jammu and Kashmir government has awarded 51 small projects to the private sector companies. The allotment made through national level competitive bidding is seen as a first major step towards augmentation of power generation and supply in the state. The government had floated the tenders for power generation several times in the recent past but there was not matching response from the entrepreneurs. The 51 projects allotted to the private sector companies, upon their completion, will be able to generate a total of 350 MW of power. It may be mentioned here that the government, in state sector, does not have an installed capacity of more than 315 MWs. Meanwhile, Minister for Power Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that Jammu and Kashmir is set to emerge as energy surplus State. For the purpose special focus has been given on speedy completion of mega, micro and mini hydel power projects in the State, besides, identification and tapping of hitherto unexploited hydel potential available. He said the roping in of private companies in power generation is the first major step aimed at fast development of hydel potential for speedy percolation of power benefits to the people. Implementation agreements and Power Purchase Agreements with 10 private sector players totaling to 107 MWs under Phase-I of the policy will be signed very soon. It is pertinent to mention here that under State Hydel Policy, operational since 2003 as many as 28 new projects have so far been offered to private sector, of which 10 stands already allotted while 18 are in pipeline.
