| All was not elegant with Gopal Sharma | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sept 23 The former Director General of Police Gopal Sharma has, by now, settled down in his new position as chief of SSB, but his replacement, as it comes out now, was not quite elegantly executed. An IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, Sharma had an unblemished record in different capacities ranging from and Sub Divisional Police Officer to the rank of Director General of Police. His exit from the office of the Director General of Police was not premature but was also not something he would have liked at that stage, sources close to Sharma told EARLY TIMES. Sharma, sources said, if were given an opportunity of choice, had two options for him. One, that he would have wanted the Jammu and Kashmir Government to wait for his adjustment on a central assignment or give him a better option to work in the state. On the contrary Sharma was caught unaware when government moved with the appointment of Kuldeep Khoda as DGP, said sources close to Sharma. The government first decided to appoint Kuldeep Khoda as DGP and then started some brain-searching that where to place Gopal Sharma. Since there was no post in the Police where a serving DGP could have been posted honourably therefore, at Chief Minister's discretion a "rehabilitation" post of the security advisor was created to "rehabilitate" Sharma, said the source who was privy to an emotional melancholy. The security advisor to the Chief Minister did not have any cut out assignment or any proper brief allotted him. There was hardly any officer directly reporting to answerable to him. In due course of time, Sharma who was a sort of workaholic found that his appointment as security advisor to the Chief Minister means just one office in the third floor of the secretariat (the floor where Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary sit in Srinagar), one vehicle, bungalow and some small helping staff. Therefore, he pitched up his case with the Home Minister in Delhi for his suitable appointment. Subsequently, Sharma was appointed as Director General of the crack unit Secret Service Bureau and he made a quite move out of Srinagar to join the new office in Delhi. Sources further said that if given an opportunity, Sharma would have wanted to head the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission till he retired. He had made this feeling known to a responsible minister in the government who has recently grown close to the Chief Minister but none heard!
