The Peoples Democratic Party leaders are waiting for the party’s patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, and Chief, Ms Mehbooba Mufti’s return to the state from the United States where they had gone recently, for finalizing its pre-poll strategy.
Party leaders said today that “though we have started mass contact programme in various constituencies in the Kashmir valley similar exercise has been started in the Jammu region.
The party received success in its mass contact programme when in Akhnoor over 100 congress workers under the leadership of an old Congress guard,Babu Ram,joined the PDP today. The party has decided to organize district level meetings and such meetings will begin from Udhampur from tomorrow. Interestingly two days back the Chief Minister had addressed a public meeting in Khour and today the PDP admitted over 100 Congress activists in the organization when in recent weeks people in the border areas used to describe the PDP as an anti-national organization.
The PDP leaders said that at present senior party functionaries were engaged in carrying out assessment on party’s standing in various constituencies.
In reply to a question they said that all the sitting PDP MLAs were sure to get the party mandate.”We have to consider the claim of those partymen who had lost with a narrow majority in 2002 poll and possiblly most of such people would be fielded in the next election,”they said.Asked whether the PDP will prefer contesting the next poll in alliance with the Congress they said that the issue will be decided by Mufti Sayeed with the AICC Chief,Ms Sonia Gandhi.The pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the PDP would depend on the attitude the Chief Minister demonstrated towards the PDP.One of the leaders said that if Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad continued to “humiliate” the PDP leaders and ministers the prospects of pre-poll alliance could be bleak.
“Yes,instead of an alliance some electoral adjustment and understanding between the Congress and the PDP was possible.Under this understanding the PDP will not field its candidates in Congress strongholds and the Congress will at the most field dummy candidates in PDP strongholds,”they said.
