| With unwise friends like Karunanidhi, Congress hardly needs enemy to dump it | | | Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Sep 24 With friends like Karunanidhi and DMK on their side, Congress needs no enemy to harm its prospects. The BJP, on the other hand will not find a better friend than the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and his ruling party in Tamil Nadu as their foes. By prolonging the controversy over the historicity of Ram and Ram Setu, claimed to have been built on the command of Rama by his monkeys force, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and other leaders and activists of the DMK are only helping BJP to be on the come back trail and come out of its internal contradictions, search for identity and electoral issues as well as the race for supremacy in the party. Whereas Congress on its part immediately realized the likely political fallout in the country of its ill advised affidavit questioning the existence of Ram ever in the history and the bridge got constructed by him over the ocean, to reach Lanka and hastily took damage control measure to withdraw the same, their alliance partner in the Union government Karunanidhi and the Shipping Minister Balloo as well as the DMK government in Tamil Nadu are adamant to create a scenario where BJP can exploit this emotive issue to its advantage and harvest electoral dividends in the elections. The mood in the BJP camp, which was on conclave of its central executive at Bhopal at the time when DMK goons led by a Tamil Nadu Minister attacked the BJP offices as well as its leaders at various places in the Southern state, was one of jubilation over the development which makes the party men martyrs for Ram and for upholding the religious faith of the majority Hindu community in the country. The violence let loose by the DMK cohorts, with the impression created about the same having been patronized by the state government, on the BJP leaders and activists as well as on the VHP and Hindu Manani leaders at various places in Tamil Nadu, has put into background the provocative utterances by a former BJP MP and VHP leader Swami Vidhanti, setting price on the head of Karunanidhi for his alleged act of blasphemy. Particularly after the BJP leaders gathered at Bhopal had distanced themselves from the uncalled for utterances of Vidhanti and even the latter had retracted from it, stating that he was misquoted by the media, there was hardly any justification in holding violent demonstration and attacks on the BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu by the DMK activists, whose black flag rally against the BJP was flagged off by the State Minister Parihi Llamvaruthi. The attacks taking place in full view of TV cameras, with police making feeble and half hearted attempts to stop the same, has definitely gone to the advantage of BJP, who is now wearing the hollow of martyrdom for the Hindu faith. It has already earned the saffron brigade a formidable ally in Jay Lalita and the former Tamil Nadu ruling party ADMK. Lalita has joined chorus with the BJP in demanding dismissal of DMK government in Tamil Nadu for its failure to maintain Law and order and for the removal of DMK ministers from the Congress led UPA government in the center. The Congress is definitely put on weak wickets by a strong ally of it in the present government, bent on hurting the sentiments of the majority community or at least providing a handle to BJP to beat the UPA government with. The Congress will be well advised to restrain Karunanidhi and the DMK from making provocative utterances as well as its workers taking the law into their own hands in Tamil Nadu where the party is in power. The precedent of Congress withdrawing support to the Janta Dal government in the centre, on the pretext of revelations coming to light of the involvement of some DMK leaders in patronizing ULTT in Sri Lanka, whose cadre were responsible for the killing of Congress leader and former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, will be sited by the BJP while demanding the Congress party to remove the DMK ministers from the Union government. Otherwise, the BJP will claim that the Congress is more sensitive over the issue of the assassination of its party leader, than the hurt to the sentiments of a community, that too the majority community in the country. With BJP returning to Ram as its saviour and to bring back it to power, the real issues of country's security in the wake of high level threat to it from international Islamist terrorism and still more important the economic problems pinching the common man, will be put in the back burner.
