| Karan Mahal in Srinagar on sale | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 24 The last scion of Dogra ruling dynasty is contemplating to sell Karan Mahal, also known as Taleh Manzil, it is reliably learnt. The owners of their last property in Kashmir are reported to be looking for a suitable buyer to purchase Karan Mahal, situated on the famous Gupkar Road. The palace that has been the private residence of Dr. Karan Singh and his family, is the most ideally located place with a panoramic view of the Dal lake as well as the Pir Panjal range of mountains. This is the last piece of property of the Dogra Royalty in Kashmir which is on the auction list. The main palace which was earlier leased out to Oberois (East India Hotel Ltd.) and which was converted into Palace Hotel, the famous locale for many a film shooting, before the onset of present militancy in Kashmir, was lately sold to the Grand Intercontinental Chain of Hotels. It is presently functioning as the most posh hotel in Srinagar. The adjoining palace, known as Hari Niwas, which was earlier housing the Intelligence Investigation Centre, is presently being readied for the official residence of the state Chief Minister. Hari Niwas has 60 rooms and its renovation is expected to cost Rs 12 crores to the state exchequer. There was a good deal of controversy over heavy burden being put on the public exchequer on this count. The lands, including orchards below the palace, on the banks of Dal Lake have already been purchased by Gausia Enterprises, a company owned by a Kashmiri, who is presently settled in Dubai. There are reports that the company is planning to setup an amusement park on the vast land, although no constructions are allowed here, as the same is feared to cause environmental disaster on the banks of the dying Dal Lake.
