| J&K loses to Himachal in U-19 cricket | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sept 24 Jammu and Kashmir lost to Himachal Pradesh by six wickets in the opening limited overs match of the under-19 cricket tournament which was played at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, Srinagar today. It was the toss that played a crucial role. Finding the wicket good for the seemers after morning drizzles, the Himachal skipper put J&K to bat after winning the toss. Lacking the exposure of playing the competitive cricket, the J&K boys struggled a lot while facing the Himachal seemers in the opening spell and could not play the full quota of 50 overs. J&K lost all their wickets for 126 runs in 35 overs. Skipper Ram Dayal remained the top scorer with 31 runs while pace bowler, Muddassir Ahmed contributed 12 runs to the team’s total. No other batsman could cross the double figure mark. Rakesh Rana was the most successful bowler from Himachal who claimed four wickets. Ashim Navang also bowled well and bagged three wickets, followed by Rashid Ahmed with two wickets in his account. In reply, Himachal chased the target in 38 overs making 130 runs for the loss of four wickets. Sumit Verma, who made the unbeaten 30 runs hit the winning boundary. Earlier, Abhimanyu Rana and Jaskaran Malhotra played excellent innings of 36 runs each giving Himachal a stong foundation. From J&K, Mudassir Ahmed claimed two wickets and Manik took one. When contacted one of the selectors said that the team played today against Himachal was one of the best side J&K have but unfortunately the conditions favoured the visiting team. “Moreover the boys in J&K don’t have the match temperament, the reason being they hardly play any domestic cricket, especially those from Jammu,” said another selector who preferred not to be quoted. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by president of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, Dr Farooq Abdullah in the presence of working committee members of the Association. Chairman of JKCA and Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mehboob Iqbal was also present. As usual, the JKCA president made number of announcements including construction of pavilion and stands at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium. Next match: Haryana to take on Punjab at Kashmir University at 9.30 am tomorrow. |
