Vikram is new state badminton champion

Beating his younger brother Vipul Saini 20-15 (conceded), Vikram Saini has become the new state badminton champion in the 35th state badminton championship which was organized by the J&K Badminton Association at Indoor Complex, M A Stadium, here today.
It was virtually taken over by the young generation after exist of both former champions, Rahul Sharma and Avnish Sharma in the semi-finals. While Rahul has lifted the championship title for 16 time, including six consecutive time, Avnish Sharma was the reigning champion. Avnish has won the title for four times including three consecutive wins.
However, both together, Rahul Sharma and Avnish Sharma retained the men’s doubles title beating the brother duo, Vikram Saini and Vipul Saini in straight sets 21-16, 21-19.
“It is good that young men have taken over. The change is a must and those bringing in a change through their hardwork and dedication must be encouraged further,” said Avnish Sharma while expressing his views.
In his immediate reaction after the victory Vikram said, “In fact, I was attempting for the top honours for the last three years but due to bad health I could not make it. And, today when the time came I had to beat my younger brother in the final.”
“The state championship is not the ultimate goal for me, I have to strive for bettering my performance at the national level in the times to come. At the same time, it is what obvious that I have to maintain the position that I have attained today,” maintained Vikram.
Meanwhile, the junior boys singles trophy was clinched by Vipul Saini, who beat Sahil Verma in straight sets 21-14, 21-19. In junior boys doubles, Vipul and Sahil beat Nikhil and Vasu in straight equal sets 21-10, 21-10.
In sub-junior boys singles final, Abhijit outplayed Aziz 21-10, 21-9 to claim the title. Earlier, in the semi-finals, Abhijit beat Arshdeep 21-15, 21-11 and Aziz beat Faisal 18-21, 21-15, 21-15. The sub-junior boys doubles trophy was won by the pair of Shiva and Aziz who beat Roail and Arshdeep 21-13, 17-21, 21-17.
The mini-boys singles title was claimed by Shantul. He defeated Ayush in the final 21-11, 18-21, 22-20. In mini-boys doubles final, Ayush and Vishal beat Shivam and Sarvgya 21-15, 21-9.
In the under-10 boys singles final, D S Shivam outplayed Parth Koul 21-9, 21-16.
In veteran’s singles final, Som Raj Gupta defeated Balbir Jamwal 23-21, 19-21, 21-18. The veteran doubles title went to the pair of Som Raj Gupta and Balbir Jamwal who beat P D Gupta and Arun Jain 18-21, 21-16, 21-12.
Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mangat Ram Sharma was chief guest in the finals and prize distribution function. He congratulated the winners and their parents for sending their wards to the stadias.
He said that our state is backward in sports as compare to other small states like Kerela and Manipur. “Efforts are required on part of the government, associations and the individuals in J&K to encourage the sports and sportspersons so that better results are achieved at the national and international level,” said the Minister.
