The Press Information Bureau –a premiere news and public opinion building agency of the government of India – has a mandate of highlighting initiatives and programs of the central government but guess what if this agency is assigned with the public relations task of the separatist organizations. This may have been a slip of pen or slip of thought but the PIB made an interesting news.
Under the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, the Press Information Bureau is a nodal information dissemination department for all central government ministries, departments and undertakings. Interestingly and ironically its wing in Jammu and Kashmir seems working for the Hurriyat Conference –though for a little while.
This afternoon, the news units here were quite surprised to see a Hurriyat Conference press note delivered by the Press Information Bureau. From its routine mailing node, the PIB's Jammu office carried an item attributed to the statement of a Hurriyat leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir.
Even though an hour later the PIB's communication officer had to beat the dust by a message that the earlier press not may be treated as cancelled but the way press release was issued it seemed that Jammu visit of the Hurriyat leader was properly covered by their representatives. The press not number 24 of September 2007 said that the Hurriyat leader who is being tried for the offences of being an enemy agent was interacting with the lawyers outside the High Court building in Janipur.
The Press Releases-24/9 said, "lingering of freedom struggle in Jammu & Kashmir may prove a hot bed for Alqaida and Talibans, like Iran and Afghanistan said Mr. Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Peoples' Movement (JKPM) which is a constituent of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Mirwaiz Group".
Quoting the Hurriyat leader, "the press note further addedHe said that struggles of any type and shape viz Islamic, political or economic where Muslims are a party, has a reason to attract Al quaida and Taliban and struggle for self determination in Jammu & Kashmir fulfils the basis for the two endangering the sovergnity of India and Pakistan as Al quida and Taliban are followed by US forces".
"He further said that, Government of India should come down from its stated position and respond positively to the four point formula of General Perrvaiz Musharaf, the only way to save the face of three parties viz India, Pakistan and peoples of Kashmir, said Mr. Mir while interacting with lawyers at Janipur Court Complex during a hearing in the Court of Principal Session Judge Jammu being tried under 3 Enemy Agent Ordinance"
However, an hour later the PIB issued a corrigendum saying: "the press release of September 24, 2007 under the caption 'movement in Jammu Kashmir a hot bed for Al-Qaida and Taliban' may be treated as cancelled.
