| Disturbing trends amidst victory jubilations | | | Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Sep 25 In the hour of country's glory, with our young cricketers bringing rare honour to the nation by lifting World Cup in Twenty20 International Cricket Series, the team India comprising young players belonging to various regions of the country and Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religions, some unto do incidents, with communal overtones in some parts of Jammu region, marring the victory jubilations, are highly disturbing. Amidst celebrations and expression of jubilation over India becoming world champion once again after 24 years, with members of all the religious communities in the country participating in the same with full enthusiasm and total involvement, along with prayers held earlier all over the country in temples, mosques, gurudwaras and churches, with religious leaders, preachers and followers of all the religious communities praying for the victory of the Indian team in the final T20 cricket match at Johannesburg, the communal clashes reported from Rajouri and Reasi towns of Jammu region should cause concern to the authorities as well as to all the peace loving and secular minded people in the region, which has a glorious tradition of maintaining communal harmony even in the face of highest provocations. While expression of jubilation, shouting of slogans hailing the Indian team and its victory with bursting of crackers and slogan shouting is the natural outlet of the acknowledgement of the acclaim brought to the nation, expression of ill will and slogans of downing with any other country and particularly provocative outbursts, implicitly branding members of a community as sympathizers of Pakistan, who lost to India, is not justified at all. But the suggestions that victory revelers in these towns entered some mosques, disturbing the people holding prayers, provoking the latter to protest against it, does not seem convincing. The Indian team won the victory over Pakistan past 9 pm and the victory demonstration did take place only after that and past 9 pm was not the time for prayers to be held in the mosque. On the contrary, the reports which are more disturbing are that some anti national elements, with the ulterior motive of giving the event communal colouring and inciting communal clashes in these towns had gathered for the purpose. There are also reports that these anti national elements had also arranged crackers, to be burst in the event of Pakistan winning the match, the possibility of which was very much there till the last. But as it happened otherwise these elements were unnerved and hence raised counter slogans against the slogans hailing India's victory. Since these charges are very serious and give an inkling of some elements bent upon vitiating the atmosphere of communal brotherhood and goodwill, by inciting communal clashes, the authorities should take serious note of the same and nip the evil in the bud, the whole gamut of the events should be thoroughly investigated and the culprits, irrespective of their communal identity, be suitably punished. In the meanwhile the wise men from all the communities should join hands to stem the rot and restore people's confidence in communal goodwill.
