On the same old issue of misplaced India-Pakistan patriotism, the communally sensitive township of Rajouri is once again on the boil as the administrative is yet to take the measures for restoration of peace as tension broke out after India's victory over Pakistan in the Twenty20 cricket match.
After last night's fracas between the members of two communities, the town remained tense today with the prevalence of a curfew like situation. "It was Army visible all around the town", a local told EARLY TIMES over phone from Rajouri as administration apprehended eruption of more tension. It seemed that after Twenty20 match where India clinched the final Cup, the Rajouri town which has an even distribution of population among the Hindus and Muslims stood divided at 50-50 with one community hailing the victory while the other objecting to it.
The Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri, Sheikh Rafiq Ahmed was not available in the town as he was away on tour of the district.
A rally of over 1000 people was taken out by VHP, Bajrang Dal, RSS and BJP in Rajouri city to protest against the incident and alleged high handedness of the police in beating the community youth in Rajouri town, official sources said.
Trouble started on Monday night soon after India won the match as some persons belonging to a community pelted stones on a group of people of the other community who were bursting crackers to celebrate India's victory over Pakistan. The Muslim leaders, however, said that the celebrating youth threw the fire crackers inside a mosque which provoked the tempers.
In the subsequent clashes and stone pelting, 23 persons, including an SP were injured. As the police tried to stop the protest rally, protesters forcibly broke the cordon and continued with the rally, they said adding police used tear gas and batons to disperse them.
Irate over the police action, protesters pelted stones in city chowk and clashed with police, who later fired several round in the air to disperse the mob.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Rajouri and 14 persons arrested in connection with the violence. However, the situation is under control and CRPF and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the town to maintain law and order, the sources said.
