Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Baig today described statistical operations as backbone of development for the Government. He said reliable data collected and put in perspective forms the fundamental input for decision-making. Mr. Baig was addressing a gathering after inaugurating Statistical Training Institute and Trainees hostel here this afternoon.
The Deputy Chief Minister suggested convening the cabinet, once or twice a year, where the statistical inputs and the data is presented and communicated to the decision making body so that a more objective, planned and proper planning strategy is adopted for the state. He said the Government now has to lay before the legislature the state of J&K’s economy for which he asked the concerned department to brace up.
Lauding the work done by the Department of Economics & Statistics (E&S), Mr. Baig asked for making attempts to synergise the efforts put in on the ground with administrative appreciation and political understanding. He said in the changed economic paradigm the role of data evaluation and planning has become very important.
Asking the employees of the E&S department to take their job with dedication, Mr. Baig asked them to inculcate faith in their job and suggested them to not only be participants in growth but the fruits of it as well. He said rich are not those who have huge wealth but those live in a prosperous economy.
Responding to the demands put forth by the employees of the department, the Deputy Chief Minister announced release of Rs. 25 lakh for modernization and maintenance of the institute. He also agreed to the suggestion of redesignation of Statistical Officers as Planning Officers and creation of a Super Time Scale post for E&S cadre. He said higher achievers among the trainees would be suitably appreciated. He said he would consider sympathetically other demands put forth before him today.
On the occasion, Mr. Baig released three publications of the department, J&K in Indian Economy, Development Strategies for J&K and Constituency wise Aminity Directory for Pulwama District.
In his speech, Chief Secretary, Mr. C. Phunsog said there is no substitute for induction trainings and hoped the institute will cater to this critical area. He said the department of E&S has expanded a lot since its creation and carved a niche on the planning plane.
