As a follow up to visit of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to J&K State on the eve of Women’s Meet organized by Central Social Welfare Board in partnership with the J&K Government and J&K State Social Welfare Board on 10th September, 2007, a deputation of women social activists from Jammu and Kashmir under the leadership of Chairman J&K State Social Welfare Board, G.M Saroori attended a consultative committee meeting convened by the Ministry of Women and Child, Government of India in New Delhi on 24th and 25th September, 2007. The meeting was held to discuss the launching of programmes for socio-economic empowerment of women in Jammu and Kashmir.
Saroori alongwith these women social activists called on Ms Sonia Gandhi, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Women and Child Development, Government of India, Renuka Chowdhary, and Chairperson, Central Social Welfare Board, New Delhi, Rajani Patil to apprise them about them the working of J&K Sate Social Welfare Board with regard to implementation of various schemes of the Central Social Welfare Board in different areas of the state through NGOs/VOs.
The deputation highlighted various problems being faced by women and children of the state due to militancy. Mrs Chowdhary assured the delegation to fully honour the Government of India’s commitment made on the occasion of women’s meet to launch special programmes to alleviate the sufferings of the women in Jammu and Kashmir and better their socio-economic conditions. They impressed upon the delegation to organize the women of the state into Self Help Groups so that the process of sanctions could be quickened. It was further suggested that henceforth the Self Help Groups may also supply for grant-in-aid for all schemes of the Central Social Welfare Board.
Saroori thanked Ms Gandhi on behalf of the women of the state for having spared her precious time to visit the state and grace the women’s meet organized by the Social Welfare Board.
