| Azad champions Gandhigiri | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 26 If the Congress party is to reward someone for espousing the Gandhian or Nehruvian philosophy, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will arguably emerge as the first winner. Since last year, Azad is seen to be working overtime to demonstrate that there can be no better follower of Gandhi or Nehru than him. It is to be seen whether these vibes reach Delhi or not where some impact is expected. Last year, on Azad's behest a sort of history was created as more than 50,000 children from across the Jammu region were drawn to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, which is also celebrated as Children's Day. No state in India is known to have such record of pulling this much huge crowd in memory of Nehru. This year, Azad's fancy has caught up with Mahatma Gandhi. This time around the school and college students are seen in mad competition with each other on the Gandhian philosophy. With the Chief Minister taking keen interest in the competition on Gandhian philosophy among students, the management of schools and colleges are leaving no stone unturned to demonstrating themselves as best Gandhians. As the Gandhi jayanti draws near, the Chief Minister has today announced that the concluding round of the debate on Gandhian philosophy and its relevance in the 21st century held in educational institutes throughout Jammu & Kashmir would be telecast live by Doordarshan on October 2. He said during his recent visit to Delhi he iscussed with I&B Minister, Priyaranjan Das Munshi holding of the State-wide debate and the latter told him that the concluding event would be telecast live on national channel. Azad was speaking during an interaction with principals of degree colleges of Kashmir division here today. The interaction was organized to have the feedback on educational and other curricular activities and construction projects especially in the newly set up degree colleges. Minister of State for Higher Education, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, Principal Secretary, Higher & Technical Education, Pramod Jain, Secretary to Chief Minister, Pawan Kotwal, Director Colleges, N D Wani and principals of 29 colleges of Kashmir and Ladakh were present. The Chief Minister was informed that 11 college students, 6 from Kashmir and 5 from Jammu, have made it to the final round of the debate to be held on Gandhi Jayanti at the SKICC here. In the schools category, 8 students, 4 each from Kashmir and Jammu divisions, have been selected for the culminating round. The Chief Minister said the final round of the competition would be simultaneously held for both college and school students. In both the categories there would be 4 prizes including Ist prize of Rs. one lakh, 2nd prize of Rs. 50,000 and two 3rd prizes of Rs. 25,000. The winners would also be given trophies and certificates. He said the prize money involved in the debate is the biggest amount to be given away in the country to students in a debate like this. He said the live telecast of the event would encourage holding of such debates in other parts of the country also. The Chief Minister was told that there was exceptionally good response from students to the debate and participants were very enthusiastic. He asked the concerned officers to ensure that all the students who participated in provincial level debates attend the concluding function at SKICC.
