| CM reviews arrangements for Oct 2 debate on Gandhian philosophy | | I'm delighted over massive response from young generation: Azad | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar| Sep 28- Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed satisfaction over massive response the debate on Gandhian philosophy has evoked among young generation in the State. More than 50,000 school and college students have participated in different tiers of the debate since it was started on September 1, 2007. The final round of the debate would be held here on October 2 when four best debaters each in school and college category would be awarded Rs. one lakh as first prize, Rs. 50,000 as 2nd prize and two 3 rd prizes of Rs. 25,000. "The overwhelming response, Azad said, is quite encouraging and indicative of the growing interest among youth in the principles of non-violence and truth preached by Gandhiji". He said he was delighted to see the huge response the debate has received from school and college students. The Chief Minister was speaking at a high level meeting here today to review arrangements for the final round of the debate to be telecast live from SKICC lawns here. The Chief Minister said that apart from the 8 finalist debaters who would qualify for 1st, 2 nd and 3rd prizes, 11 other finalists would also be given consolation prize of Rs. 5,100 each. In all, 19 students both from schools and colleges have reached to the final round. Azad said that 2007 is the centenary year of the Satyagraha movement launched by Gandhiji in India. He said the United Nations has convened a special session on the occasion where Mrs. Sonia Gandhi would represent the country. He said the Prime Minister would administer pledge to the countrymen from Vigyan Bhavan. He said Jammu & Kashmir has taken a lead in the country by organizing a massive exercise across the state in the shape of the debate on Gandhian philosophy. He said the event has become a record of sorts as never before have 50,000 students taken part in a debate anywhere in the world. "I am not talking about 50,000-strong audience but 50,000 actual participants, he emphasised.
