| Govt yet to final feasibility report | | Mobile jammers in jails | | Early Times Reporter Jammu|Sep 30 Almost a year after recovering mobile phones along with several SIM cards from the custody of militants and under trials lodged inside highly fortified Kot Bhalwal central jail, the prisons department is still struggling to complete the feasibility report on installation of mobile jammers in the jails. According to official sources, installation of mobile jammers inside central jails in Jammu and Kashmir will take some more time as security experts are still examining the feasibility of the project. "We have to assess the range that will be covered by the mobile jammers. we do not want to install the gadgets which have a limited range,"highly placed sources said. “ It is true the proposal was mooted during last year in October but we cannot take any step in haste and we are weighing all options available with us. Confirming that the work on the crucial project was going in the right direction a senior Prisons authority said, the experts are examining the technical reports from various companies and the assessment report from different jails in the country where mobile jammers have been installed to compare the high and lows of each system before giving the final nod.He said that besides this "the Government has to weigh the financial implication of the project because it may cost over Rs. 70 lakhs." It may be mentioned that soon after the recovery of mobile phones and SIM cards from inside the jail, the prisons department went in to tizzy and submitted a proposal to the state government to install jammers inside the jails to stop use of mobile phones. It is also learnt through reliable sources that Prisons department is extending the use of CCTV sets inside other jails in the state.In the first phase the department has selected jails in Udhampur,Kathua and Baramulla and the work on the project would begin shortly. We have taken several other steps to upgrade the security grid in and around all jails in the to prevent jail breaking and use of mobile phones by the militants. The installation of highly sophisticated gadgets for monitoring the movement and activities of jail inmates will further fortify the jail premises. |
