Kashmir unrest: Education sector worst hit as miscreants target schools in valley | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 29: The education sector is a major casualty of the ongoing unrest in valley as miscreants are targeting the educational institutions and shockingly at least five schools were burnt in the last five days alone. As per official sources atleast 17 government schools including middle, high and higher secondary have been burnt by miscreants during the unrest of which seven were gutted completely while rest suffered partial damages. According to conscious civil society, the education sector has become a major casualty of the ongoing unrest in valley, day after a private school was set ablaze in South Kashmir on late Friday evening, a futile bid was made today to set Government High School building ablaze by some unidentified miscreants in Mirhama of Kulgam district. According to the reports some unidentified persons late Saturday evening threw two petrol bombs inside the school premises resulting one room on fire however the fire was brought under control by alert locals of the area. A senior police official confirming the incident told Early Times that some miscreants threw petrol bombs to set the school on fire but fortunately some locals promptly acted and doused the flames. Meanwhile, reports said that an attempt was made to set ablaze a Government High School but due to the efforts of local and their alertness the building was saved An eyewitness from the locality in telephonic conservation told early Times that they will lodge a complaint with police in this regard to identify the guilty. Pertinently in the past three-and-half months of Kashmir unrest, at least one school has been torched in each of ten districts in Kashmir. As per media reports most of the schools burnt were government-run schools while two private schools too were set ablaze. Meanwhile sources said, "While Police is on job to identify the 'miscreants' but aware civil society members in various localities have decided to put volunteers to ensure safety of the school buildings in respective localities. |
