| At SKICC, Azad pockets history today | | 50,000 students at Gandhian elocution first event in country | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 1 Tomorrow, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti –if all goes as decided –a history of sorts shall be written as more than 50,000 active participants would gather to share their views on the Gandhian philosophy. A unique concept conceived by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Gandhian elocution contest and debate will go as first such event in the country. Obviously, as long as this event is recalled in the public memory, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will always be remembered for this pathbraking initiative –a rare tribute to father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. The event held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Center on banks of Dal Lake will be telecast live on Doordarshan. Eleven college students, 6 from Kashmir and 5 from Jammu, have made it to the final round of the debate to be held on Gandhi Jayanti at the SKICC here. In the schools category, 8 students, 4 each from Kashmir and Jammu divisions, have been selected for the culminating round. The final round of the competition would be simultaneously held for both college and school students. In both the categories there would be 4 prizes including Ist prize of Rs. One lakh, 2nd prize of Rs. 50,000 and two 3rd prizes of Rs. 25,000. The winners would also be given trophies and certificates. The prize money involved in the debate is the biggest amount to be given away in the country to students in a debate like this. The live telecast of the event would encourage holding of such debates in other parts of the country also. The organizers said that there was exceptionally good response from students to the debate and participants were very enthusiastic. All the students who participated in provincial level debates have been invited to attend the concluding function at SKICC. It may be recalled that last year, on Azad's behest a sort of history was created as more than 50,000 children from across the Jammu region were drawn to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, which is also celebrated as Children's Day. No state in India is known to have such record of pulling this much huge crowd in memory of Nehru. Meanwhile, the radical women's organisation 'Dukhtaran-e-Millat' today asked people to stay away from functions organised by the state government in connection with Gandhi Jayanti. "We appeal people to stay away from functions being organised by the government in connection with Gandhi Jayanti," its chief Syeda Asia Indrabi told reporters in Srinagar. |
