| General's opening salvo: no troop cut | | New Army Chief Kapoor says, situation not normal | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 1 On his first day in office, the new Army Chief has not washed away what he predecessor held the previous day but also he ruled out any immediate pull out of troops from Jammu and Kashmir. The outgoing Chief of Army Gen JJ Singh had said in Sunday that situation had generally improved in Jammu and Kashmir thus livening up the scope for demilitarization politics. However, on the day one in office, the new Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor ruled out any withdrawal of troops saying that normalcy had not yet returned to Jammu and Kashmir. General Deepak Kapoor, who took over the position of Army Chief from General Joginder Jaswant Singh on Sunday, said, "The decision to withdraw troops from Jammu and Kashmir and the north-east should be taken only after considering the situation in these states." The new Army Chief also ruled out any dilution of army's role in fighting terrorism and said re-deployment of forces in Jammu and Kashmir can be considered if there is further improvement in the situation. "Though there is an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast, there cannot be any curtailment of army's role in combating terrorism," Kapoor, said. The Army Chief made it clear that the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir did not warrant any withdrawal of forces. "As and when things improve, we can take a fresh look on troop positions," he said and asserted that the present 'strategy' of pinpointed raids on militant hideouts in Jammu and Kashmir was paying 'dividends'. "We want the situation in J&K to further improve to give people a chance to live in peace," Kapoor, who has served as Northern Army Commander for more than a year, said adding the multi-layer deployment of forces was leading to reduction in violence in the state. |
