| Gandhi Jayanti celebrations trigger sharp reaction from Kashmiri separatists | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 2 A month long celebrations of Gandhi Jayanti in Jammu and Kashmir, with the educational institutions holding debates and seminars on Gandhi ji's life and philosophy, which concluded on October 2, the birth centenary of the Father of Nation by holding a grand function at SKICC Srinagar where about 50,000 students are reported to have participated, has sparked off sharp reaction from the secessionist and anti India elements in Kashmir valley. While the state government, particularly Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad described the unprecedented exercise of putting a big show at the function, where the winners of the elocution contests were distributed prizes, claiming the same to be aimed at reducing the stress level among the youth in the state, living under the shadow of gun and high level violence by bringing home to them the message of non violence and human love preached by Gandhi ji, the secessionists and their supporters among the intelligentsia in Kashmir have characterized the entire exercise to be aimed at diverting the attention of the Kashmiri youth in particular and masses in general from the ongoing movement for "Azadi" from Indian occupation. While ignoring the level of violence let loose by the terrorists, under the name of Islamic Jehad, resorting to killings of the innocents, some pro separatist columnists, through their write ups in secessionist friendly newspapers of Kashmir, have ridiculed the exercise of giving Gandhi ji's message of non violence to the Kashmiri youth, by the Indian establishment, amidst repression and killings of innocents let loose by the Indian Security Forces. Describing the entire exercise as futile and pouring salt into the wounds of Kashmiris, the separatists have also criticized the same for leading to loss of precious time of the youth, with no studies being carried on in the schools and colleges for full one month, which has been described as a deliberate attempt to mar the academic career of Kashmiri youth. The denouncement of the celebrations of Gandhi Jayanti and preaching Gandhian message of non violence to the Kashmiri youth, by hardcore secessionist and Islamic fundamentalist woman leader, Asiya Indrabi, the Chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, has been more sharp. Giving a call for boycott of these celebrations by the students in Kashmir Asiya Indrabi asked the students to follow the life and teaching of Prophet Muhammad instead of Gandhian philosophy and teaching of non violence. Asiya Indrabi has also termed these celebrations as well as holding of cultural programs in Kashmir as aimed at sexually exploiting the Kashmiri women. In a sceething attack on the organizers of the cultural programs and participants in the same belonging to the fair sex, Asiya has accused politicians, bureaucrats and army of sexually exploiting women under the garb of cultural programs and the army exercise of operation Sadhbhavana. Addressing a gathering of women at Halmatpora in Kupwara district, the Dukhtaran-e-Millat Chief charged that "In the disguise of so called cultural programs and operation Sadhbhavana, the Kashmiri women are sexually exploited by army officers, politicians, mainly minister and bureaucrats" "These programs are organized only to facilitate the army officers and ministers to select girls for sexual abused" she added. Coming down heavily on the parents who allow their daughters to participate in these programs she said, "The parents feel that their girls are made to dance before the ministers and officers, to display their talents and get accolades and wish them success, but they are only falling in the trap laid to entangle their girls in sexual exploitation". She also said that there was no relevance of Gandhi's non violence theory in Kashmir where the chastity and dignity of women is outraged in broad daylight. She also advised the girls to carry sharp edged knives with them, to safeguard their modesty. Notwithstanding the call for boycott given by the secessionist leaders and their criticism in strongest term of the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, thousands of youth participated in the concluded function of the month long celebrations, held at SKICC Srinagar, which amply demonstrates common man's yearning for peace in Kashmir and their reverence for Gandhi ji and his philosophy of non violence and love for humanity. |
