| Major killed, 2 soldiers injured in militants' ambush | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar|Oct 2 A Major was killed and two soldiers injured when a group of militants ambushed a operation party of Rashtriya Rifles in North Kashmir's Baramulla district, this morning. Well informed sources said that a column of 34 Rashtriya Rifles was moving in Rajwali forests this morning to launch a combat operation in the area. When the troops were moving forward, a group of unidentified militants ambushed the troops and opened indiscriminate fire. The troops were taken to surprise but managed to take positions, sources told News Agency of Kashmir. However bullets pierce through the chest of a Major – who was leading the operation party – leading to his on the spot death, while two jawans sustained bullet injuries. The troops returned the fire and a brief encounter took place between the two sides. Though officials claimed that the operation was going on in the area, sources said that the militants managed to flee from the spot taking cover of dense forest. Reinforcement was also called in and massive searches were launched to track down the militants, sources said adding, the search operation was in progress till late this evening. The identification of the slain Major and injured jawan could not be ascertained immediately. No militant group has claimed the responsibility of the attack. |
