| PDP seeks explanation on delay in troops reduction | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Oct 3 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti met defense minister A K Antony and inquired as to why the central government was delaying the decision on the report submitted by the defense committee set up by the prime minister in PDP's demand for troop withdrawal. Stating that the troop reduction has become an imperative vis-à-vis the latest developments in valley, Ms Mufti has regretted over the confusion in Army ranks over the troop reduction saying that the former army chief General J J Singh in his tenure had stated that Kashmir was a socio-political problem which needs to be addressed in a political way leaving no role for the security forces in solving the vexed issue. She said that retired Gen. Singh had further stated that the insurgency in Kashmir was brought down marginally and the role of army has proportionally decreased. She expressed astonishment over the current army chief's statement in which he has negated the troop reduction saying that normalcy was yet to return to Kashmir. So such contradictory statements from army top brass create confusion among the masses. Citing the example of Handwara incident to Antony in which 33 RR ransacked the police station beating six police personnel to the pulp, she said that such actions are earning a bad name to army. The PDP president also informed Antony about various places like Zabarwan, Gulamarag and Sonmarag etc where the security forces have constructed concrete strictures in violation of Supreme Court's strict rulings about the forest land. She further impressed upon the defense minister that political decision's vis-à-vis Kashmir needs to be broadened and security expert's confined point of view should no dominate political decisions. Mufti also expressed concern over the demarcation of Saffron land by CRPF which she said has created panic among the people as the Saffron is vital component of states' economy and inheritance. Mufti has observed that the security forces have done their job and time is ripe for their withdrawal. Referring Kashmir as a political issue in which force has no role to play she has added that troop reduction could pave way for an enabled atmosphere for the peace process which could led to a long lasting solution to the problem in the sub continent. |
