Kashmir has many tourist spots waiting to be developed
10/3/2007 10:18:26 PM
Kulgam | Oct 3
The tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir wants the government to pay attention to the development of many beautiful spots in the state.
One such spot is the Aharabal falls, referred to as the Niagara Falls of Kashmir, which is 80 kms from SrinagarMinister for Agriculture, Abdul Aziz Zargar has said that the area is now being given due importance with infrastructural facilities being established for the convenience of tourists"
A development authority has been formed to improve the conditions at Aharabal. We are building roads, hotels and other infrastructural facilities. A place to stay and cabs to take the tourists for sight seeing will come up soon," said Zargar"It will benefit a lot of people if Aharabal is developed. Tourists will obviously enjoy more but apart from that, we can also make money out of it," said Ali Mohammad, a resident.
At present, tourists face problems in finding lodging facilities for an overnight stay” The government should see to it that the tourist spot is maintained properly. There is no space to sit, what will one see, these rocks? Also, there is no space to stay," said Ghulam Mohammad, a tourist.
Much of the infrastructure in the valley got destroyed during seventeen years of turmoil with far off tourists spots most hit as huts and other infrastructure were burnt down. Tourism in the state revived in 2005 when 600,000 tourists, most of them Indians, visited the state. But the numbers dropped off again last year after a series of attacks on tourists.
