| Groupism in NC likely to benefit Congress | | Parties kick off bye- election campaign | | Early Times Reporter Rajouri | Oct 3 The major political parties have almost kicked off their election campaign for the Haveli Assembly segment in border district of Poonch which fell vacant due to the death of National Conference MLA , G M Jan, a few months back . Soon after the indications that election commission is likely to hold elections for this seat in December, all the political parties have geared up their activities among the electorates. Among these parties, the opposition National Conference seems to be more aggressive in its traditional strong bastion. However, the local leadership of the party focuses more on the credentials and contributions of the local probable candidates instead of the party program before the masses. This observers feel there is an indication that the party may to split in to many groups in the days to come. Sources said, the party cadres got divided into three major groups last week, when former Chief Minister and National Conference patron, Farooq Abdullah asked Dr. Shahnaz Ganai, daughter of former minister and Sheikh family’s old loyal Late Ghulam Mohammad Ganai, to resign from the government job to prepare for the coming assembly elections. Soon after the assurance of party mandate from Farooq Abdullah, Dr. Shahnaz Ganai resigned from the government service and announced her active participation in the politics saying that she has taken this step on the request of NC patron Farooq Abdullah. In this connection, in the last week of September, Dr. Shahnaz organized a good public meeting at Dak Bunglow Poonch conveying the message that she will be the party candidate in the coming By- elections for Haveli assembly segment. In this public meeting, most of the speakers recalled the contribution of the Ganai family to the people of Haveli instead of presenting the party program before the masses. In the same week, after six days, Ajaz Ahmed Jan son of late MLA , GM Jan organized a separate public meeting of his loyalists in Poonch with an aim to convey the message to the party high command that his father’s contribution can not be ignored . In this meeting too, the speakers remembered the contribution of late GM Jan for the people of Poonch instead of party program. However, a third group led by Gujjar leader and MLC Chowdhary Bashir Ahmed Naz didn’t participate in any of these meetings and is preparing for a separate show , said sources. When contacted, Ch. Bashir said that he was keenly watching the developments in party and is waiting for a final word from the party high command. “ Until and unless a final decision comes from the party high command only then I will decide my future course of action”, said Bashir Naz adding that the present development in Poonch is no way beneficial for party in the district. The observers are of the opinion that by indicating the party mandate for Shahnaz Ganai in advance , Farooq Abdullah has disintegrated the party cadres in the district . A senior party leader wishing not to be named said that with the advance announcement that Shahnaz Ganai will be the next party candidate, most of the party leaders have started looking their future in the other parties . Because who so ever will win the by- election seat will be repeated by the electorates in the coming general election after five months. “ I think no aspiring candidate will wait for more six years. Definitely ,the party is heading towards multiple splits in the district”, he added. However, an other old party worker in the district, Abdul Majid doesn’t believe the Farooq Abdullah’s commitment with Shahnaz Ganai saying that he ( Farooq) can not keep his promise. He says few months back when Farooq Abdullah visited district Poonch he had garlanded son of late MLA GM Jan and had even announced that he will fill the gap created by late Jan but it doesn’t mean that he announced his candidature. He further said that a delegates group of the party has already left for Srinagar to apprise the party chief Omer Abdullah and General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed about the developments in the party cadres in the district over the candidature issue. However, whatsoever will be the consequences of the infighting among the NC cadres, observers feel that this all may benefit to Congress in the district because PDP is already running at number three in the Haveli assembly segment. And this will be major set back for Party in the state if NC looses this seat because who so ever party wins this seat will prove beneficial for it in the rest of the state. Because this seat will give a message for the party in the whole of the state, argue observers.
