Jammu | Oct 3
Confusion prevailed all over Jammu region today with the late announcement by the Government about observance of holiday by all government and private educational institutions in connection with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations across the state today.
While some educational institutions, both government and private, observed the holiday, the majority of the schools, especially the private institutions, functioned as usual, so much so that Government college for Women Parade ground also opened as usual but was closed when authorities came to know that government has announced a holiday for all schools and colleges in the state today.
The students had trek a long distance especially in rural areas to reach their schools but to their surprise they found the schools closed and cursed the government for not announcing the holiday in advance.
The Government Degree College for Women, though in the heart of the city, also opened as usual as majority of the students attended their classes. However, when the college administration came to know about the holiday announced by the government, they allowed the students to go back .
Talking to ‘Early Times’ some of students said that state government. announced holiday at late night and every body is not supposed to know about it especially in the remote and far off rural areas. Some of the students who came from Samba, Vijaypur, Akhnoor, Kathua and R.S.Pura said that they had to cover a long distance to reach their respective schools and on reaching there they found schools locked Some of the Principals of the private schools said that since the examination of 8th and 9th classes are in operation these days they had no other option but to keep their institutions open.
Managing Director Gandhi Memorial Higher Secondary School , Kewal Krishan Sharma said that only 120 days are beeing given to the students for studying and during these 120 days a long syllabus has to be covered . Ordering holidays day in day out would be detrimental to the interests of the student community, he said and maintained that the syllabus is such circumstances could not be completed within the given time frame.
