| PM wants media's help to implement welfare programmes | | | New Delhi | Oct 3 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday urged the media, especially the Indian language media, to help implement welfare programmes, which he believes would change the face of rural India in four to five years if implemented effectively. Addressing the 66th annual general meeting of the Indian Language Newspapers Association here, Manmohan Singh said: "We have today a large number of grassroots programmes which seek to empower our people to become active partners in the process of development. If these programmes are implemented honestly and effectively, they can certainly change the face of rural India in the next four-five yearsBut there are leakages, there are administrative inadequacies and it is the duty of the media and other civil society agents to highlight these weaknesses so that these programme can be implemented in the spirit that guided their implementation," he said. However, the prime minister expressed his concern over the slow process of qualitative growth in the media The quantitative growth we have witnessed in the Indian media has outpaced qualitative growth. This is understandable partly because demand has been outstripping the supply of well-trained journalists. In the long run, I hope, as supply adjusts, this problem will get addressed," he said, urging the language press to improve the quality of journalism in the country .He also asked the Indian language media to "help take India forward by changing the mindsets" of the people. Pointing out that modernisation was not westernisation, Manmohan Singh said successful modernisation would be rooted in the enduring traditions. However, he added: "We must adapt some of these values, some of these norms to suit the needs of changing time. For example, our attitude towards caste, our attitude towards women and manual work .These must change so that our people, particularly our women and downtrodden sections of our society, do feel they are part of the processes of social change and our effective partners in the process of social and economic development. He said the modernisation process should "embrace all that is good and creative in the new ideas and the new experiences that define the world around us. The prime minister commended the Indian language media for bucking the "deceleration trend in the growth in English language publications" and promised all help for development of Indian language media.
