| Basantar celebrates Raising Day | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 4 The 6 MADRAS (BASANTAR) celebrated its 45th Raising Day in traditional military style with great zeal and fervour on October 1, 2007 in Jammu. The battalion was raised by Captain Bagot in 1777 at Tanjore and re-raised after Second World War on October 1, 1963 at Madras Regimental Centre, Wellington. The unit has actively taken part in all operations of Indian Army including 1971 Indo-Pak War, OP ORCHID, OP CACTUS LILY, OP KARTOOS, OP HIFAZAT and OP PARAKRAM. Over the years, the battalion with glorious past has grown to be one of the finest battalions of the Indian Army. The unit was awarded the Theatre Honour of Punjab and Battle Honour of Basantar during 1971 Indo-Pak War and has been decorated with Unit Citation for counter insurgency operations in Manipur. It has also won two Kirti Chakras, one Vir Chakra, one Shaurya Chakra, nine Sena Medals and many other gallantry and distinguished service awards while serving the mother land. The Raising day celebrations included a Special Mandir, Special Sainik Sammelan, Pagal Gymkhana, Brakhana and Dinners at Officers and JCOs’ Mess. A brass Idol of Nandi weighing 45 Kg was unveiled and dedicated to all ranks of Basantar family during the special mandir function by the Commanding Officer, Colonel BS Bali. The main chowk of Sunjuwan Cantt named Basantar Chowk dedicated to the martyrs of 1971 Indo-Pak War was also inaugurated by Commander, Sunjuwan Brigade on this auspicious occasion. |
