| Chaman regrets: No one remembered Shastri | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Oct 5 The former Union Minister & Senior leader of the BJP, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has welcomed the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti at a large scale in Jammu and Kashmir also but regretted little remembrance of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri although he had played quite an important role in bringing closer this part of the country to rest of India and by his bold actions Shri Shastri had made it clear to all concerned that this state is an integral part of India and would be defended as such. Commenting upon the statements of certain separatists and fundamentalists objecting over the observance of the Gandhi Jayanti in the state, Prof. Gupta said that the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi was having great relevance in the present day world, especially in Jammu and Kashmir, when the religious bigotry is posing a great threat to the humanity by resorting to violence and terror. Referring to the role of the late Prime Minister, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the BJP leader said that it was for the first time that anybody in the Congress under the sterwardship of this great visionary that attempts were made to rectify the wrongs inflicted to this part of the country by Shri Nehru and others in the Nehru Gandhi dynasty. It was during the regime of Shri Shastri that several signs of separatism between this state and rest of India were removed including the separate head of this state viz the Sadar-e-Riyasat as also the nomenclature of the Prime Minister was changed to put it as Chief Minister, he added and several other steps followed like that of persuading the national parties to extend their units to Jammu and Kashmir also to have national integration in the real sense at the level of the people. Prof. Gupta pointed out that the Congress earlier in this state was operating through the National Conference as a hireling of the NC but it was first time that the unit of the Congress was established in this part of the country in 1965, and that Praja Parishad was merged into the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Communist Party of India and other national organizations extended their activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Paying rich tributes to Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prof. Gupta said that little man was having a big heart and in 1965, when Pakistan defying the cease-fire Agreement of 27 June 1949, of Karachi, launched a massive Tank invasion in Chhamb sector and Pakistani troops were advancing to grab Jammu and Kashmir by force, the Prime Minister Shri Shastri had lost no time and the Indian army was directed to not only repulse the attack but also enter deep into Pakistan. And thus, Pakistan was taught a befitting lesson by capturing large territories of that country and in practical it was made clear to the world that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and any invasion of this state would be taken as attack against India. Prof. Gupta recalled that many problems in Jammu and Kashmir were created when there was the Nehru—Gandhi rule at the Centre and now when again the dynastic Congress is being headed by the family, there are many dangers looming large to the sovereignty of the country in this part of India and aggressor Pakistan is being provided the status equal to India by making uncalled for offers including one that of using the waters and other resources of this state both by India and Pakistan. Hence, there is need to remember late Shastri and pledge to defend the unity and integrity of the country. |
